Armed Robbers Attack Commercial Bus, Rape 18 Passengers

Eighteen women aboard a commuter luxury bus were reportedly raped in the wee hours of yesterday armed bandits few kilometres from Okene, Kogi State. The victims, comprising single and married women, were among passengers in the ill-fated bus with a Lagos registration number XM753 AKD, operated by a popular transport company (name withheld by us), which was travelling from Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, to Abuja, when the incident occurred at about 2.am.
One of the victims, who narrated the episode to Daily Sun, said the journey had been smooth from Port Harcourt till a short distance from Okene, when they ran into an ambush laid by the robbers.

“I was asleep when suddenly, I heard the sound of gunshots. The robbers shot at the driver’s side in a bid to force the vehicle to a halt. It was then I realised that they had barricaded the road with logs of wood. Then, they ordered all of us to disembark and marched us into the bush.

After dispossessing us of our money and other valuable items, then, they raped all the women in the bus, numbering about 18, one after the other. It was a traumatic experience which lasted for about three hours,”, one of the female victims who declined giving her name recounted.
Daily Sun learnt that it was indeed a pathetic scene as some of the female victims who could not conceal their pains wept profusely as they narrated their ordeal when the bus arrived its terminal at the Utako district of Abuja at about 10 am yesterday.
Kogi State police spokesman, ASP Okasanmi Ajayi, however, said the incident was not officially reported at the command. “I have made contacts to the various police divisions, but there is no record of the incident,” he told Daily Sun on phone.

BREAKING NEWS: Boko Haram Deny Kidnapping, Killings of Sokoto Hostages

The men arrested in the aftermath of Thursday’s botched attempt to free two abducted foreigners in Sokoto have told security agents why they killed their victims.

British Chris McManus and Italian Franco Lamolinara were killed by the suspects as Nigerian soldiers and the British Special Boat Squad (SBS) stormed a house in Sokoto to rescue the foreign engineers.

They had been in captivity since their abduction inBirnin Kebbi, the Kabbi State capital, last May.

Five men were arrested in connection with the abduction and killing of the duo.

Among them is Abu Muhammed believed to be the ring leader of the group and a factional leader of the Islamic sect, Boko Haram.

They were moved to Abuja yesterday by security agents for interrogation.

The suspects, sources said, told their interrogators that they were under instruction of their leaders to shoot the hostages whenever they came under any threat from security agents.

One of the suspects was quoted as having said : “We had a standing instruction to kill the hostages immediately we sight security agents around the building.

“We were to kill the hostages since we were not sure of being alive after an encounter with security men.”

However, a faction of the sect yesterday denied involvement in the abduction and eventual murder of the Briton and Italian.

According to an international cable television, a source informed that an un-named Boko Haram spokesman called a Nigerian journalist in Sokoto to tell him that the Islamic group had no hand in the incident.

The cable television stated that the Boko Haram faction spokesman claimed that they had never been involved in kidnapping and would never do it for the purposes of extortion. It maintained that for now, bombing its targets remained its major strategy and had no intention of changing it.

Senior security sources yesterday said a desperate call by a Boko Haram member during a gun battle with Abu Mohammed and others in Zaria might have led to the retaliatory killing of the hostages in Sokoto.

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that the Thursday operation was coordinated by the State Security Service (SSS) and the military in conjunction with British secret agents.

It was gathered that it had been difficult to locate the whereabouts of the hostages in the last 10 months because their captors kept relocating them at the slightest suspicion of security tracking.

The SSS,it was gathered, however, recorded a breakthrough when it located Abu Mohammed and some other leaders of the sect in Zaria , Kaduna State.

A reliable source said: “Those arrested in connection with the abduction and killing of the hostages have been moved to Abuja for interrogation. I mean Abu Mohammed and four others.

“They are being quizzed to know their motive, why the hostages were killed and the Al-Qaeda connection. This probe has international dimension to it because Britain and Italy will want to ascertain why their citizens were targets.”

Giving an insight into the operation ,the source said : “The operation to free the hostages was conducted in Zaria and Sokoto.

“Having established that Abu Mohammed faction abducted the hostages, the SSS conducted a comprehensive investigation which led to the uncovering of his hideout in Zaria on Tuesday. While he was in Zaria , this leader made sure that the hostages were kept in Sokoto.

“Following the finding of the hideout, the SSS, supported by the military, succeeded in invading the place and arrested Abu Mohammed and four leaders.

“The moment the game was up, one of those arrested was chosen to lead security agencies to the compound in Madera Quarters in Sokoto where the hostages were kept.

“At that point in Zaria , the first leg of the operation by the SSS and the military achieved 100 per cent success.

“Concerning the operation in Sokoto, we are probing a clue that during the gun battle in Zaria , one of the Boko Haram members made a phone call to Sokoto that their leaders were under siege.

“This theory of phone call is being analysed to know whether it is true or not.

“You know the operation in Zaria was a heavy crossfire, Boko Haram was humbled. I think the phone call made those in Sokoto to become desperate to kill the hostages.

“The operation would have been like that against Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan .”

A top government official said: “The British Government was involved in this operation and their security operatives were convinced that the SSS, the military and other agencies gave their best to free the hostages.

“It is obvious that the sect is deadly and we all have to be a step ahead. I mean the international community.

B*R*E*A*K*I*N*G N*E*W*S: Explosion Strikes Central Nigeria Church, Kills 3

JOS, Nigeria — A suicide car bomber attacked a Catholic church Sunday in the middle of Mass, killing at least 10 people in the latest violence targeting a church in a central Nigerian city plagued by unrest, a state official said.

The bomb detonated as worshippers attended the final Mass of the day at St. Finbar’s Catholic Church in Jos, a city where thousands have died in the last decade in religious and ethnic violence. Security at the gate of the church’s compound stopped the suspicious car and the bomber detonated his explosives during an altercation that followed, Plateau state spokesman Pam Ayuba said.

The blast damaged the church’s roof, blew out its windows and destroyed a portion of the fence surrounding the church’s compound, Ayuba said. At least 10 people died, Ayuba said, while many others were wounded in the blast, including soldiers who also had been stationed at the church.

“He destroyed so many things,” the spokesman said.

No group immediately claimed responsibility though the city has been targeted in the past by a radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram. The sect claimed a series of bombings in Jos on Christmas Eve in 2010 that killed as many as 80 people. The sect also claimed a similar church bombing on Feb. 26 on the main headquarters of the Church of Christ that killed three people and wounded 38 others.

The sect, which speaks to journalists through telephone conference calls at times of its choosing, could not be immediately reached for comment Sunday.

Jos and surrounding Plateau state have been torn apart in recent years by violence pitting its different ethnic groups and major religions — Christianity and Islam — against each other. Human Rights Watch says at least 1,000 people were killed in communal clashes around Jos in 2010.

The violence, though fractured across religious lines, often has more to do with local politics, economics and rights to grazing lands. Muslims in the city also say they are locked out of lucrative jobs in the region as the Christian-led state government doesn’t recognize them as citizens.

The Catholic church attack also comes after a failed raid Thursday by British and Nigerian commandos left a Briton and an Italian hostage dead in Nigeria’s far northwest. British officials have blamed a splinter cell of Boko Haram for the attack, something a spokesman for the group has denied.

However, the attack has opened a new front on Nigeria’s ongoing struggle with terrorism, showing any region across the nation’s Muslim north can be attacked — and anyone, including foreigners, could be targeted.

After being imprisoned for nearly a year, British construction worker Chris McManus, 28, and his colleague 47-year-old engineer Franco Lamolinara, who were both working for an Italian building company, were murdered as a special forces rescue operation, initiated by prime minister David Cameron, got under way.

In Rome, a number of Italian MPs are demanding clarifications about why Italian authorities were in the dark about the operation.

"We must shed full light on the reasons why the British government did not inform our own," said Massimo D'Alema, president of the parliamentary committee for the security of the republic.

Speaking on the BBC's Newsnight, Senator Lucio Malan said the Italians were not satisfied and wanted to know why they had not been consulted.

"It is quite uncommon that a country that is involved is not informed before. Apparently it was a very difficult situation and it might have been the best decision but it is still to be explained why the Italian authorities haven't been informed," he said.

MP Rosa Calipari said: "It would seem that despite the presence of an Italian who had been in the hands of kidnappers for a long time, our country was told only after the blitz."

Calipari said questions should be asked about why Italian authorities and intelligence officers in Nigeria were not involved in the decision to give the go-ahead for the operation.

The President of the Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, meanwhile sent condolences to Lamolinara's family, saying the country was moved by the death of "one of the multitudes of Italians who bring honour to the country by bringing their best works of creative engineering to the whole world".

Downing Street said that the UK had worked relentlessly to secure safe release of the hostages since their captivity in May 2011 and had been in regular contact with Italian authorities continuously since then.

Government sources confirmed that the hostages were killed once the operation had been "set in train" but it is still unclear how close special forces from the Special Boat Squadron (SBS) were as the two hostages were murdered by terrorists from the northern Nigerian group Boko Haram.

Downing Street batted off claims that they had not kept Italian officials in the loop saying their security personnel had been informed as the operation got under way but added that Cameron's conversation with his Italian counterpart Mario Monti had been delayed as the Italian PM had been in the air as the operation came to its conclusion.

Stunned family and friends in Lamolinara's hometown of Gattinara prepared to declare a day of mourning.

"It was a shock," the mayor, Daniele Baglione, told the Italian news agency ANSA. "We had faith. We didn't expect it." "Franco was well-known and loved in town," Balgione said. "It is a loss for our community."

On Thursday, a grave-looking Cameron announced the death of saying he had authorised the operation in the wake of credible information that their lives were in imminent danger.

The special forces rescue operation, also supported by the Nigerian army, had been recommended by UK intelligence following meetings of the government's emergency committee, Cobra.

The operation may have taken place in Sokoto, a city that has been a home for members of Boko Haram who recently claimed responsibility for a series of deadly church bombings during the Christmas period.

A Nigerian official said intelligence leading to the location of the captives came after the Nigerian secret service raided a Boko Haram hideout in the state of Kaduna. That operation yielded information that the two hostages were being held in Sokoto. The hostage-takers retaliated shortly afterwards by murdering both men, according to the source.

Nigerian security agents have been receiving intelligence training from western countries with years of experience in handling terrorism, including the US and the UK.

Military sources say the training would normally start to show results within 18 to 24 months, about the time since foreign countries began technical assistance to tackle Boko Haram.

A group known as "al-Qaida in the land beyond the Sahel" claimed in December that it had captured McManus. The group released a video showing a blindfolded and bearded man in an orange vest. Three men in dark clothing stood behind him armed with rifles and a machete.

A statement on behalf of the Nigerian president, Goodluck Jonathan, commended the "co-operation and understanding of the British and Italian governments" and assured that "the perpetrators of the murderous act, who have all been arrested", would be made to face "the full wrath of the law".

The operation was led by the SBS including some Royal Marines, with as many as 20 UK forces personnel involved.

An SBS unit tried to free the men "after a window of opportunity presented itself", said an official familiar with the incident. A Whitehall source described the men's captors as among the "nastiest al-Qaida-affiliated terrorists there are".

Speaking on Thursday Cameron said: "Our immediate thoughts must be with Chris and Franco's families, and we offer them our sincerest condolences. Both families have endured a terrible ordeal, and this is a devastating moment for all of them."

He explained: "After months of not knowing where they were being held, we received credible information about their location. A window of opportunity arose to secure their release.

"We also had reason to believe that their lives were under imminent and growing danger. Preparations were made to mount an operation to attempt to rescue Chris and Franco. Together with the Nigerian government, today I authorised it to go ahead, with UK support."

"I also want to pay tribute to all those, including UK personnel, who worked so hard to try to bring Chris home safely. I am very sorry that this ended so tragically," Cameron added.

"Terrorism and appalling crimes such as these are a scourge on our world. No one should be in any doubt about our determination to fight and to defeat them."

Local reports suggested that the military surrounded a house in the city and there had been sounds of gunfire for much of the afternoon.

Gunfire continued into the night as the military fought with those in Sokoto. Ambulances ferried the wounded. Security forces erected a cordon blocking journalists from getting within a kilometre of the site.

Cameron visited Nigeria last July, months after the hostage capture, and will have discussed the issue with Jonathan. No briefing was given on the hostage position at the time to the journalists accompanying the prime minister, a sign of the extent to which the Foreign Office hoped McManus could be freed without publicity.

McManus's family said in a statement: "We are of course devastated by the news of Chris's death, which we received earlier today. During this ordeal we have relied heavily on the support of our family and friends which has never waned and has enabled us to get through the most difficult of times.

"We are also aware of the many people who were working to try and have Chris returned to our family, and his girlfriend. We would like to thank all of them for their efforts. We knew Chris was in an extremely dangerous situation. However, we knew that everything that could be done was being done.

"Our thoughts are also of course with the loved ones of Chris's colleague, Franco Lamolinara, who are also coming to terms with this truly sad news.

"We now need time to grieve and come to terms with our loss. We would therefore be grateful if you would respect our privacy at this most difficult of times."

Lamolinara had worked in Africa for many years, but returned to Italy 10 years ago before undertaking a further job with an Italian company, Stabilini Visinoni, based in Nigeria. He was said to have been captured on the last day of his contract. The men had been involved in building the central bank in Birnin Kebbi, capital of Kebbi state.

Monti took the phone call from Cameron on a plane trip back to Rome from Belgrade. Monti said: "An unpredicted acceleration of events took place over the last hours. While fearing an imminent danger for the hostages, Nigerian authorities activated the rescue."

Lamolinara leaves behind a wife and two children, an 18-year-old son and a 16-year-old daughter

More drama as Britain deports 120 Nigerians

The British Government has deported no fewer than 120 Nigerians from the U.K. for various immigration offences, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The deportees arrived the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja in Lagos in the early hours of Friday.

The deportees were airlifted back home aboard a chartered cargo aircraft that landed at the cargo section of the international airport.

A reliable source told newsmen that the deportees were brought home in the early hours, so as not to draw undue attention from the public.

The deportees, comprising mainly young men and women, narrated their unsavoury experiences, saying that they were brought back home unprepared by the British authorities.

Many of them were said to have kept themselves busy, making telephone calls to their friends and relations on how to pick them at the airport.

The source said that the deportees also made frantic efforts to move their luggage which were packed in `Ghana Must Go’ bags from the cargo wing of the airport to the airport's main gate, preparatory to finding their ways out of the airport.

Some of the deportees were said to have expressed reservations over the way and manner they were brought home in a cargo aircraft.

Scores of airport workers stopped by to interact with the deportees, as some of them narrated their ugly experiences and not knowing what exactly to fall back on, now that they had returned to a country they left many years ago.

One of the deportees, a young lady, who declined to give her name said: "I am not interested in discussing why we were brought back home but my problem now is how to get out of this airport without drawing unusual attention.

"I must, however, add that it is not a pleasant experience,’’ she added.

Another deportee, a young man, lamented that they were sent home unprepared and wondered how he would be able to cope. (NAN)

Italian Wives Ban Husbands From Coffee Cafe Where Women Dress Half-Naked

This is a very funny story, I never knew Italian women where this jealous, until I read the story.

Wives have ban their husbands from visiting Italian cafe where busty barmaid serves up drinks in skimpy outfits

Men rush to the bar not for the quality of the coffee, but because the bar workers appear for work in highly revealing outfits.

Hundreds of male customers flocked there day and night, leaving their cars double parked in the surrounding streets.

Congestion became such a problem that the lady mayor announced she was considering an emergency bylaw to limit traffic in the area, even the city mayor banned her husband from going to the bar.

Now women in the small northern Italian town of Bagnolo Mella have declared Le Cafe out of bounds to their men.

The female owner of the coffee cafe said: ‘I don’t see what the problem is – it’s just a bit of harmless fun.
‘If the guys come here what can I do?
'I know I have upset the women but that’s not my problem.
'It’s not my fault if guys want to come and have a drink in my bar.’

She added that some customers were travelling up to 70 miles just to have a coffee in her bar.

She has 5,000 new friends on Facebook while a local poll found that 46 per cent of respondents said partners of her male customers should be ‘asking themselves why their partners prefer ladies in the bar to them’.

Several wives from the town have been on TV to complain. One said: ‘It is outrageous and should not be allowed.
